SVQ Level 3 (SCQF Level 6)
Advanced level aimed at or leading to Senior Stylist/Technician role. Courses may be structured as a course of learning or as a course of assessment only, depending upon whether the candidate requires the advanced skills and knowledge at this level or whether the candidate is already experienced and competent, requiring only assessment for certification.
Course includes: Creative styling and dressing, Creative cutting, Creative colouring and lightening, Client consultation, and 3 options from units that include: Relaxing hair, Creative hair extensions, Creating a variety of permed effects, Contributing to the financial effectiveness of the business, Colour correction, Developing your creative hairdressing skills, Providing specialist hair and scalp treatments and, Contributing to the planning and implementation of promotional activities.
The skills that a candidate would learn (the units that he/she would select) will normally be decided upon through consultation with the candidate and his/her employer and should satisfy the needs of both.
The qualification is competence-based rather than time served (timeframe for successful completion dependent upon own ability, commitment to learn the supporting knowledge base and opportunities to train and practice in the employing salon) but, as a guide, course duration of 18 months for entrants with at least 2 years prior experience.
Enrolment is year round and dependent upon employment within a hair salon.
Learning all takes place in your employing salon. Technical training (learning of practical skills) is delivered by your salon's own experienced stylists or trainers through regular training sessions which, in some salons, takes place one evening every week but is regarded as part of your working week. Learning the theory (knowledge skills) is mainly through self study and can be text book and paper based or internet based or, a combination of both. Our experienced and qualified assessors visit you regularly in your salon to assess your technical competence and to support and assess your knowledge.
Entry requirements for this course
Mandatory entry requirements: a minimum of 2 years prior experience in a hair salon.
Desirable entry requirements: a minimum of four standard grades at General or Credit level.
As all learning takes place within the candidate's employing salon, courses are available in any hairdressing salon within Central Scotland, including Edinburgh & Lothians, Fife and Tayside regions. Course relies on continued employment within a hair salon (course may be continued with another employer). Hours of work and training will be agreed between candidate and employer. Candidates may start course at any time throughout the year.
